Discover the beautiful layers, textures, and marks that only oil and cold wax can achieve finding inspiration within your own marks, compositions and intuition. We will explore various techniques such as working methods, substrates, drying times, opaque and transparent color, pigments and powders, blending, color schemes, glazing, solvent reduction, transfer and printmaking techniques, creating textures, adding collage and more. Plenty of demos and individual discussions.
All skill levels would benefit from this class, especially beginners. (Advanced techniques are an option for those who have taken a prior class.)
Gina will provide cold wax, some oils, tools, and R&F pigment sticks for class use, 2 sheets of Arches Oil paper, one 8” x 10” pre-gessoed, taped birch panel, various mark making tools to share and samples of materials such as stencils, pan pastels, and collage materials, etc.
Gina will provide 4 oz of cold wax. Additional wax will be available for sale.
SUPPLY LIST
You need to bring:
- Imagery you want to use for inspiration, if desired. (symbols, motifs, photographs, etc.) or you can work intuitively.
- Clean cotton rags or a roll of soft paper towels
- Paper palette 12”x16” or larger, or roll of freezer paper is what I use
- Blue or purple Painters Tape Easy Release tape is best (Amazon)
- Wet Ones (Brand Specific) wipes
- Apron (You will get messy.)
- Wax paper for layering between wet panels to transport home as pieces will be wet.
- I suggest a tube of white, as we use it more often.
- I highly suggest additional substrates such as cradled panels or an Arches oil paper pad
- If you do want to ad collage, you may want to bring some thin papers. Some will be available.
Optional but recommended:
- Assortment of oil paints if you have them, maybe a few of your favorite colors.
- Gloves or protective cream for hands
- Notebook or sketchbook for taking notes and keeping ideas
- Anything that you think might make interesting textures (stencils, skewer sticks, etc)
- 4” or 6” soft rubber brayer

ARTIST BIO:
Gina Louthian-Stanley is a multi-media artist, writer, and workshop instructor living in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Discovering printmaking, Louthian-Stanley created her thesis works in monotype and has primarily been a monotype printmaker since the late 70'S. While many areas of art and types of media interest Gina, she began her ‘wax’ journey in 2006. She masters the versatility, permanence, and textures of wax, both hot (encaustic), and cold wax (medium), which allows for the deep layers found in her work. She also utilizes these mediums for printmaking, a build-up of layers creating luminous color and textures enhance her ethereal works. Each work usually begins without a preconceived image. Stanley's works represent the physical and emotional sensations, which carry the viewer into an intimate visual narrative, typically relating to the nature around her.
Gina has been recognized for her accomplishments by having works in several books and publications including; Cold Wax Techniques and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry Mc Laughlin.
