"KATE"
“All that separates, whether of race, class, creed or sex is inhuman, and must be overcome. “ Kate Shepherd’s creed led New Zealand, in 1893, to be the first nation in the world where all women had the right to vote. Kate was a skillful writer and organizer as well as a persuasive speaker. The New Zealand suffrage movement worked in conjunction with the Maori women (wahine) to obtain a voice in public affairs. The suffragettes used a white Camellia as their symbol, the yellow Kowhai is the national flower of New Zealand (Aotearoa).
