"MARY" MIXED MEDIA SOFT SCULPTURE 312025

Mary Anning was a self taught pioneer in the field of Palaentology long before women were recognized as scientists in this field.  Born on the coast of England, she used her skills and knowledge in geology, anatomy and scientific illustration to document her discoveries.  In 1823 she was credited with the discovery of the 1st complete Plesiosaurus and in 1828 the Pterodactyl, the larges flying animal.  Her extrodinary discoveries provided essential evidence central to learning the history of earth.

The body of work Debra refers to as “Birds of a Feather” is a collection she started while getting her MFA in the late 70’s. The collection’s work commemorates women: women of accomplishment, women in her family and friends. The pieces show gratitude to the women they represent, for their contributions, struggles, love and support. These creations have taken on many forms: metal and wood sculptures, paintings and most recently sculptural textile birds using repurposed materials.
