LAYERING WITH ACRYLIC PAINTS

The reason I call my class acrylics with attitude is because I like strong paintings with contrast of size, value and color, and by using acrylics in layers, it’s a joyful process. Whether painting abstracts, landscapes or still life paintings, this process can be employed.

I started out as a watercolor painter and earned signature status in several national organizations but felt that I couldn’t be as adventurous as I wanted to be. I learned that you can achieve rich colors, can add light, and can actually have fun painting.

In my class, I want to emphasize layering even though there are many other ways to enjoy acrylics. Begin each piece with what I call an abstract underpainting, and from there add layers of opaques and transparent colors.

In the first class, we will concentrate on paint quality by mixing water and pigment into a uniform consistency. This is an important step in creating layers. Mixing various complementary colors to achieve non boring darks, and adding non chalky lights is a skill to master in day one. We will use watercolor paper and sketchbooks this day.

Day two, the class will center around positive and negative space as well as values to create good composition. The negative space defines the subject and is as important to consider as the subject itself. We will use watercolor paper, collage and canvas this day.

Day three, by using a value study and small color sketches, our final painting will be an opportunity to express our unique viewpoint. Whether photographs are used or abstraction is the subject, this piece will convey mood through color or scale, brushstrokes and possibly added collage pieces.

Supplies can be purchased from Dick Blick:

Masterson Sta-Wet premier palette that comes with palette paper 03029-0000

Golden heavy body paint tubes
     Primary Cyan
     Primary Yellow
     Titanium White
     Pthalo Blue
     Quinacridone Burnt Orange

Liquitex heavy body cadmium-free red medium

Brushes:
Simply Simmons 3/4” flat wash brush or similar
Princeton #20 round wash brush or similar
( Princeton #26 round wash brush is also good)
#10 or #12 round wash type brush with a good point

Sketchbook, soft pencil, water container such as big yogurt container, any colored pencils such as Caran d’Ache Neocolor if you have them, tissue paper, roll of paper towels

Two canvases at least 18x24. I like the gallery wrapped 11/2 depth, but for workshop purposes, get whatever depth and quality you want. The cheaper canvases usually have less tooth, and get slick faster.

I will bring watercolor paper and each student can buy individual sheets from me as needed, or else, please bring two 22x30 sheets of Arches watercolor paper.
