Botanical printing, aka Eco Printing, is a rapidly evolving field with exciting new discoveries made nearly every year.  With mordant, water, contact and steam, plant images can be captured on fabric.  By adding iron and natural dyes, the variety of images an artist can create expands exponentially.

This class is designed to build a strong knowledge base and excellent techniques.

  • First, students will observe the results that mordants, tannins, natural dyes and plants produce on silk and linen.
  • Second, using a layered teaching approach, we’ll start with basics and build upon concepts by introducing new elements as we go. Students will experiment with these inputs to find combinations that produce results that are pleasing to them. They will gather these experiments into a journal to record their discoveries.
  • Finally, they will put their newfound knowledge to work creating complex botanical prints on scarves or fabric. Students will leave the class with lots of skills, a notebook of botanical print samples, and several scarves or larger pieces of fabric.
