While the word ‘excavation’ often refers to the physical removal of accumulated layers of sediment or soil to recover that which time has vanquished, or may never have been know, I tend to think of excavation as an emotional experience. Not a physical process, but a psychological encounter. Not the discovery of artifacts, but a recognition of their meaning in the context of their making.
I read them like a diary. I see them as a memoir. I hear them as a echo as their story is retold.
Not unlike the previous series, If Walls Could Talk , this most recent series — Abandoned Spaces — is a natural extension of the excavation metaphor that has dominated my thinking and influenced my painting for decades. Not a record of an experience, but an expression of the experience itself.
