Collection: Artist: Kelly Lanning Phipps

  • Kelly is an American Representational Painter born and raised in the mountains of
Western North Carolina. She began illustrating while still a high school art student and in her 20’s teamed up with a group of local plein air painters in the region.  That group went on to form the Western North Carolina Plein Air Painters, of which she was a Signature Member.

From 2004 to 2008, she attended The Art Atelier in the up-and-coming River Arts District in Asheville.  There she studied Classical Drawing and Picturemaking in the tradition of the French School.  Her work has evolved from this study to include oil and pastel painting with an Impressionistic handling of color.

Her time is divided between commissioned portraiture, landscape and still life work.  While still enjoying painting en plein air, she also composes landscapes in the studio utilizing the flora and fauna of the region to convey narratives which inspire the viewer.  She also enjoys giving live demos and teaching Classical Drawing and Plein Air Painting.
