Small Lignum Vitae Footed Bowl
Lignum Vitae “Tree of Life” is an extremely hard and dense wood indigenous to the Caribbean and the North coast of South America. It is a small slow-growing tree, considered endangered and is protected. It is 3.5 times as hard as Oak and sinks when submerged. Our first nuclear submarine, the USS Nautilus used Lignum Vitae for its shaft bearings. I was able to collect a small amount from a felled tree in St. Thomas, USVI, in 2009 and use it sparingly in my art.
An exceptional blend of wood turning and mixed media mastery come together in Holland's work. Each piece is one of a kind and mindfully created.
