Eco Botanical Printing with Natural Dyes

October 1-2, 2022

10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

$245 plus $65 supply fee

Up to 8 people (4 min)

Eco Printing, also referred to as Botanical printing, is a process by which pigments and tannins in leaves and flowers are printed on natural fiber fabrics.  The results can be stunning and ever the delight when the bundles are opened. We will combine the printing with natural dyes to create unique pieces you would never be able to replicate.  We’ll do lots of experimentation with natural dyes and modifiers to get different effects.   This two-day workshop will cover:

  • Use of various natural dyes and modifiers for backgrounds
  • Use of different carrier blankets
  • Proper bundling technique for larger items
  • How to create mirror images
  • How to set the pigments and dyes
  • How to prepare your cloth
  • List of plant varieties for best results

We will begin by using a few sample size pieces to experiment with variations and then move on to print two silk scarves or table runners.

Supply fee includes all fabric and scarves needed, natural dyes, modifiers, mordants, and use of instructor’s tools for the day.

Participants should bring:

  • Leaves (a list of good printers will be sent out about a week in advance. And a small bucket to keep them in water.
  • Old cotton sheets or other absorbent 100% cotton fabric to be used for carrier blankets. White or light-colored sheets or fabric work the best. If you don’t have any in your linen closet, start looking at thrift shops. Flannel or cotton jersey work very well. Fabric should be well washed before the workshop.
  • An apron
  • Notebook and Pen to take notes
  • Thin medical gloves if you have them. I will also bring some for those who don’t have any.
  • If you have any 100% silk or wool small garments or accessories you wish to overdye (light colored)
  • Your lunch or cash to order from a local restaurant

Note this workshop will be done outside under canopies.  Because of the time of year, we should enjoy pleasant weather, but please dress accordingly.
